Japanese-Scandinavian cocktails · Small plates
73 1 Charoen Prathet Rd, Chang Khlan Sub-district, Mueang Chiang Mai District, Chiang Mai 50100
Bar San is the bar that The Infatuation tells you to visit first when bar-hopping in Chiang Mai. There’s a reason for that.
The space blends Japanese precision with Scandinavian minimalism — cement walls, metallic countertops, clean lines. Two levels offer two moods: the ground floor is bright and minimal, the upstairs is dim and intimate. Both are good. The upstairs is better.
Come early — 6pm if you can — because Bar San doubles as a kitchen worth taking seriously. The braised beef tongue with raw egg, the mentaiko spaghetti, the beef tartare on toast — this is drinking food elevated to the point where you’d come for the plates alone. Most people don’t expect a cocktail bar to serve food this good. Bar San doesn’t care what you expect.
The cocktails follow the same logic: precise, balanced, surprising without being strange. The Ichigo Sour and the Ume Old Fashioned are signatures, both using Japanese flavours with a lightness that makes them dangerously easy to drink. The bartenders dance while they work — not performatively, just happily — and the whole room picks up that energy.
With a 4.9-star rating from over 200 reviews, Bar San is one of the few hidden bars in Chiang Mai that’s hiding in plain sight. It doesn’t need a secret entrance or a gimmick. It just needs you to walk in.
What to order: Start with the beef tartare and an Ume Old Fashioned. Let the evening find its own direction from there.
Best for: The closing act. Come here last, have a late snack, and head off for the night.
